This phrase “Are we kinder and gentler yet” was made famous by George HW “Poppy” Bush during a 1988 campaign speech. It is unclear as to whether these buttons were made in agreement with or opposed to the future president’s position. The phrase was again brought to popularity in 2010 by Sir Elton John, when he stated that the USA was a “mean-spirited nation” and he “hoped it would become a kinder and gentler one”.
