Additional Information

Charles H. Percy, originally a businessman from Chicago, was elected as Governor of Illinois in 1964 after being encouraged by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. In 1966 Percy ran against Democrat Paul Douglas, and won with more than half of the votes. During his time as Senator, Percy was popular in Illinois for attempting to tackle the issue of low-income housing, making it easy for him to find volunteers for future campaigns. As a Senator, Percy opposed the Vietnam War, was chairman of the Alliance to Save Energy. Percy held the position of Illinois Senator for eighteen years until 1985, when he was defeated by Paul Simon. Afterwards, Percy spearheaded the movement to end Chicago’s history of nominating federal judges from a list chosen by local politicians, and afterwards was mentioned as a presidential candidate in the late 1980s but never officially ran. Percy remained active in politics until his death in 2011.
