Additional Information

John Ross "J. R." Ewing, Jr. is a character played by Larry Martin Hagman on the soap opera Dallas (1978–91) and its spin-offs, including the revived Dallas series (2012–13). J.R was the centerpiece of the show and was depicted as a covetous, egocentric, manipulative and amoral oil baron. David Jacobs, the show's creator, recounted the character as the villain-as-protagonist, a combination of hero and villain. Jacobs links the popularity of the character's unapologetic commitment to self-interest to the Ronald Reagan's Presidency and the shift of the culture that would perceive greed to be O.K.
