Additional Information

The personae of Aunt Jemima was created in 1889 by Chris Rutt and Charles Underwood for their pancake mix. This black mammie character was portrayed by many different women over the years, the first being Nancy Green, a former slave. The Aunt Jemima product proved to be so popular that it was well known all over the United States, and still is today. Aunt Jemima Pancake Days were fundraisers especially popular with Lions Clubs that began in the 1950s. For the fundraisers, Quaker Oats provided step by step guides and supply kits.
